Brenda Nokuloza Fassie, South African singer, song writer, dancer and activist affectionately called “Mabrrr” by her beloved fans was born on the 3rd of November, 1964 and died on the 9 of May, 2004. For her 58th posthumous birthday which was on the 3rd of November, 2004, her entire catalog became available on digital streaming platforms for the first time ever.
This included all her renowned classics. Asides her solo digital catalog, the ones with her band “Brenda and the Big Dudes” which started in 1983 were also released. The members of the band were; Brenda herself, Desmond Melotana, Dumisane Ngubeni, Job “Fats” Mlangeni, David Mabaso and Rufus Klaas.
Brenda’s songs were always known to be raw, honest and indigenous; because of this she was called so many names like
Queen of Africa Pop, Madonna of the townships or black Madonna.
Even though she died a tragic death, her legacy still lives on in her music. Almost everyone that lived in the ninety’s can still remember the sound of her voice on the radios every morning. It is therefore a beautiful development to easily get that nostalgic feeling by streaming the songs.
