In late September, Kim Engelbrecht, a South African became the fifth African female actor to be nominated for the International Emmy Awards. She hopes her career and this exceptional achievement will help motivate young South Africans to achieve their dreams and goals.
From the streets of Cape Town, 42-years old Kim was born and bred in the Port City and quite popular there. She started off her long career as a TV host of a Youth Development show.
Her lead role as a criminal profiler in the crime series ‘Reyka’ earned her the latest nomination for Best Performance in the International Emmy Awards which honours TV shows made outside the USA.
She got her first movie role at the age of 12 in an Italian production and had her breakthrough in a popular dinnertime South African soap, “Isidingo”.
Kim said it is really exciting to be able to express herself and also act as an actress.
She added, “I think most actors want to work locally, and also have the opportunity to work abroad. So I’m really very lucky that I’m able to do that.”
The actress has also worked in Hollywood, as she has featured in the TV series ‘The Flash’ and the sci-fi drama ‘Raised by Wolves’ by Ridley Scott.
The TV series ‘Reyka’ in which she investigates a series of murders in the sugar cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal province was also nominated for Best Drama Series.
However, Kim hopes that her career will be an inspiration to young South Africans and also motivate them to chase their dreams.
Furthermore, the winners of the awards will be announced on November 21, at a ceremony in New York.
