Asamoah Gyan, a 36-year old Ghanian footballer enrolled in the Football Association Wales (FAW) coaching in June and has now completed his 6 months residential training.

He has been out of action for almost two years after sustaining an injury while playing for Ghana League Side Legon Cities FC. This striker was Ghana’s all time leading scorer with 51 goals from 109 matches. He was also Africa’s all time top scorer at the quadrennial football showpiece with six goals from three tournaments. He also scored three goals in the 2010 World cup in South Africa which propelled his team to the quarter finals. He was the poster boy for the Black Stars in many tournaments.

Sadly, he has been off course as he has not been in action for up to two years and has not featured for the Black Stars since playing at the 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

He expressed his desire to return to the national team ahead of the 2022 World Cup which would have been his fourth appearance at the global tournament but that desire did not materialize.

However, this striker is not ready to throw in the towel yet with his football career. He has gone ahead to obtain a UEFA-B license to become a coach. On Wednesday, 17th November he posted on his social media “Your new UEFA license coach is here, thanks to all who made it possible and a special one to the Wales FA, this is just the beginning. January 2023, coaching clinic loading.”

This license is just a level below UEFA-A license and with this license , he can be head coach of men’s amateur clubs, youth teams up to 16 and assistant coach for professional clubs.

He has also made us aware that having a coach clinic is on his agenda and that is something that could happen next year.
