Representing 79 countries, the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific group of States (OACPS) held its penultimate meeting on Friday in Angola’s capital Luanda.

The annual meeting was held under the theme “Three Continents, Three Oceans, a Common Destiny: Building a Resilient and Sustainable OACPS”.

The Organisation was founded by the Georgetown Agreement in 1975 with the objectives of sustainable development and poverty reduction within its member states, as well as a greater integration into the world’s economy.

This is the tenth Heads of State summit that the OACPS has held and also the first of three held in Angola as the rotating presidency.

The year’s meeting was decided on by Angola to focus on the pressing issues of climates and good governance, including fighting against corruption, as the Maldives climate change is a threat to its very existence.

Maldives  – the Island State recently joined the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific group of States this year although it is desperately looking to gain international support to fight against the threat.

The summit was expected to have the President of the European Union, Charles Michel and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in attendance.

The meeting was scheduled to conclude on Saturday with all the Heads of State presumed to sign a summit declaration.
