Granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, Ndileka Mandela has kicked against Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for calling her grandfather’s name to sell Live to Lead, their recent Netflix docuseries.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, England, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released a series of documentaries inspired by the life and legacies of Nelson Mandela, as world leaders gave messages of compassion, courage, humility, generosity and hope as they also reflected on their legacies.
The Live to Lead docu series came after their other well accepted documentary, Harry & Meghan while the Sussex couple has admitted the Nelson Mandela inspiration factor via the Live to Lead synopsis which reads: “Several world leaders committed to making a difference in the world share their life stories.”
In an interaction with The Australian, Ndileka Mandela pointed out the fact that “Harry needs to be authentic and stick to his own story. What relevance does granddad’s life have with his?”
She added that she doesn’t believe Prince Harry or Meghan have ever properly met with her granddad, or probably they met while Harry was still a kid in Buckingham palace, whereas his quotations are used in the documentary to draw in people to make millions without the Mandela family benefitting.
In her own words, the social activist also said: “I know the Nelson Mandela Foundation has supported the initiative but people have stolen grandfather’s quotes for years and have used his legacy because they know his name sells – Harry and Meghan are no different from them.”
Newsweek reported citing data published by Netflix that the Live to Lead docu-series has failed to make it into Netflix’s global top 10 chart, even though Prince Harry and Meghan has become a household name in Netflix’s biggest documentary premiere.
He adds: “We would like to invite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to work in conflict-ridden areas in Africa and the Middle East. The plight of refugees is at its worst in all of human history and it’s a cause we are ready to work with. We need more people to ‘Live to Lead’ and welcome their efforts to encourage others to emulate the founding father of our democracy and global icon of human rights, justice, and dignity for all.”
The grandson of Nelson Mandela, Mandla Mandela, who is also a tribal chief of the Mvezo Traditional Council in an interaction following Ndileka’s comment, “My grandfather is a global icon and his name is synonymous with the struggles for justice, human rights and the suffering peoples of the world. We are repeatedly reminded of his words ‘that as long as there is a single human being struggling anywhere in the world, our struggle is far from over’. We welcome all who strive to uphold the legacy of President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and are free to use his name to that end as long as they adhere to the values he advocated and support the causes he supported.”
He added, “We hope that their utilization of Madiba’s name is more than just a marketing ploy and a tagline. Long live the legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Long live.”
