The President of Uganda, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been honoured with an award for Outstanding leadership and commitment towards protection and conservation of the environment.

The President in November last year was also awarded the Climate Mobility Champion Leader Award at the two-week long Climate Change Convention which took place at Sharm El-Sheikh in Egypt.

The award for Outstanding Leadership and Commitment was received on behalf of the President by the first Deputy Prime Minister and also the Minister for East African Affairs, Hon. Rebecca Kadaga.

She delivered the award to him yesterday evening at the State House, Entebbe, as the president was in the company of the First Lady Janet Museveni.

President Museveni has called on and urged Ugandans to focus on fighting against environmental degradation, and on several occasions issued out statements, cautioned the public against destroying the environment for human activity which is a very big danger to human existence.

He also advised the communities living around rivers and lakes in Uganda to leave protection zones of 100 meters and 200 meters respectively to protect the integrity of the fragile ecosystems.

Rebecca led Uganda’s delegation at the COP27 meeting, the 27th conference of parties under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, she described the recognition as “a big honour and motivation for Uganda to continue on the issues of climate change”.

In the same award category, Uganda was awarded alongside Botswana and Niger.
