Ian Kagame is the first son of the present President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame. He has just recently joined his father’s security team, the elite Presidential Guard. The presidential guard is the army unit that guards Rwanda’s President, Paul Kagame and his family.
In August 2022, he graduated from the United Kingdom’s Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, making him one of the three Rwandans who graduated from the prestigious class of 2022. The following month, he graduated from the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako, Bugesera District to become an RDF officer. He is a second lieutenant in the Rwandan Defence Forces.
His first appearance as part of the Elite Republican Guard was during the national prayer breakfast 2023 on Sunday. He was seen in a dark suit, a blue tie and a white shirt.
Pictures of him keeping an eye on his father and his surroundings have gone viral. He was seen moving in front of his father as he entered the Kigali Convention Center for his address.
Uganda’s President’s son,Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba commented on this, he said “Officer Cadet Ian Kagame, I wish you all the best in Sandhurst! Be strong, be very fit and let nobody intimidate you! You were always strong even as a young child. I remember you fighting your father and me. Focus on the course alone and you will make it! I am proud of you”.
Lieutenant Kagame has now joined the list of children of heads of State who have been pushed close to power through the military.
