Over the past 20 years, Information Communication and Technology have grown fast in most sectors. As much as its growth spurt is, there is still a lot of work to be done in the education sector. Teachers still rely on the old traditional teaching methods because that was how they learnt.
Albeit, times are now changing, and relying on old teaching methods is detrimental to the educational system. Schools should be equipped with educational ICT-supporting infrastructure and teachers should be trained on the pedagogy of ICT in teaching.
School curriculum should be designed in such a way that it includes ICT integration in subject areas. Information Communication and Technology education improves engagement and knowledge retention. Studies show that the engagement level is increased with students ICT was integrated into their lessons. Technology provides the opportunity to make education more fun because the same things are taught differently. It also offers new learning techniques and improves the work-life balance. It also plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of education.
ICT also promotes fast thinking skills. The effective use of ICT in education demands skills like justifying the use of ICT to provide solutions to problems. It develops literacy and the use of technology capability. The advantages of ICT are unlimited but one of the most important advantages is that it encourages collaboration. It brings children together; they have to discuss what they are doing for their work and this opens up the avenue for communication, which leads to language development.
In this vein, Botswana has successfully distributed ICT gadgets to all senior secondary schools in the country. Thus bringing them a step closer to achieving ICT integration in the educational system.
