• FIBA Africa confirmed Angola as the host for the FIBA AfroCan.

On Monday, FIBA Africa announced that Angola would host the upcoming 2023 FIBA AfroCan which will take place from July 8 to 16.

FIBA Africa confirmed this during an official ceremony held on Monday, 27th February 2023.

Based on the agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Angolan Basketball Federation (FAB) President Moniz Silva and FIBA Africa Presiden Anibal Manave at Luanda, the host country’s capital.

This makes Angola the second country to organize the competition after Mali which hosted the first edition of the FIBA AfroCan in 2019.

The 12-nation, four-year FIBA AfroCan continental tournament is geared toward players from the host countries.

Angola’s experience and capacity as a host nation were lauded by FIBA Africa President Anibal Manave, who also urged the Southern African nation to exert all reasonable efforts to ensure the success of the 2023 FIBA AfroCan.

According to Manave, AfroCan, “is a huge part of our strategy”, as it enables national federations to get organized and gives young basketball players the opportunity to play at the highest level at some time in their careers.

José Moniz, the Angolan Basketball Association (FAB) president, appreciated FIBA Africa for choosing his nation to host the competition.

So far, teams from the defending champions DR Congo, Kenya, Angola, and Morocco have qualified for this year’s FIBA AfroCan.
