Egypt’s construction company ORASCOM and the Arab Contractors have signed a contract with French construction company NGE and its subsidiary TSO to construct 330 kilometers of Egypt’s high-speed electric railway.
The electric railway is a double-track line that will run from Ain Al Sokhna, close to Alexandria, running through October 6 City outside of Cairo to Borg El Arab, and will also have more than 100 turnouts.
NGE, France said that work will commence in early 2023 and will require the mobilization of almost 500 people on-site.
Orso Vesperini, COO for International and Major Projects, NGE, acknowledged the significant contribution to the project, “which will provide nearly 90% of the Egyptian population with access to fast and reliable public transport”.
He added that “it will also make a significant contribution to sustainability by shifting freight traffic to rail and stimulating Egypt’s economic development”.
The French company boasts of winning the contract because of its experience with high-speed project management and its capacity to execute planning adapted to the client’s goals.
In January 2021, Egypt’s National Authority for Tunnels signed a memorandum of understanding with several construction companies including Orascom to design, build, equip, and commission Egpyt’s first high-speed line.
The line will have the capacity to carry both freight and passenger services, with a design speed of 250km/h, and will have 20 stations.
