World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) is the largest international debating tournament in the world. It is one of the most significant annual international student events.
The University of Ghana Debate Society has made history by becoming one of the first African teams to make it to the finals of the highest debating stage after winning the World Public Speaking Trophy in 2019 and 2020.
The 43rd edition of the World Universities Debating Championship took place from 26th December 2022 to 4th January 2023 in Madrid, Spain, and was hosted by Rey Juan Carlos University.
With more than 400 universities and tertiary institutions representing over 90 countries, WUDC is recognized as the largest debating and public speaking competition in the world.
The representative of the University of Ghana (UG), Mr. Elisha Owusu Akyaw, and Miss Zempare Wesoamo were also bronze medalists in the Pan African Universities Debate Championships (PAUDC) in 2022.
Mr. Elisha Owusu Akyaw is the President of the Debate Society at UG. he made his debut in 2019 at Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand. He is very confident that the UG Debate Society could attain milestones in championships when the opportunity presents itself. His desire to excel on the world stage became his focus after his debut in 2019.
Miss Zempare Wesoamo made her in-person debut at the WUDC. she was elated that their hard work and sacrifices counted in making history and putting UG in the limelight again.
The tournament’s 44th edition is scheduled to be hosted by the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Vietnam, and the Fulbright University in Vietnam from 26th December 2023 to 4th January 2024.
UG team hopes to come back stronger in the next edition as they could not win the gold medal.
