• Tems was nominated for the Oscars that took place yesterday.
  • She won the Grammy for her contribution to a hit song.
  • South African musicians, Zakes and Nomcebo also won a Grammy.

Temilade Oyeniyi popularly known by her stage name, Tems is a Nigerian award-winning superstar. She was nominated for the 2023 edition of the Oscars in the category of Best Original Song Courtesy of a collaboration she had on the song, “Lift Me Up” which she sang with Rihanna.

The Oscars took place last night the 12th of March 2023, with Tems looking stunning wearing an angelic white, cloud-like dress. The ceremony took place at the Dolby Theater, Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles, US, and was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Tems sadly did not win the Oscars but she is still high from the congratulatory messages from winning a Grammy award. She won the Best Melodic Rap Performance category for her contribution to the hit song “Wait for U” with Future and Drake.

Other artists including Tiwa Savage, Waje, and Omowunmi have all posted messages congratulating the award-winning musician. Nigerian Afrobeats singer, Olamide also posted “ it’s Tem’s time. Nobody can stop her shine. Superstar”.

This also makes her the first Nigerian female artist to win a Grammy. Although, it has been argued that the historic first was achieved by British-Nigerian singer Sade, whose real name is Helen Folasade Adu, who has won the award up to four times.

Tems is an artist that self-produced her debut single, Mr. Rebel in 2018, and just a little over four years later, she is a Grammy winner and has a list of collaborations with notable international artists.

Meanwhile, South Africans Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini, and Nomcebo Zikode also won a Grammy Award – for Best Global Music Performance for their collaboration, Bayethe.

All in all, Africans are getting the recognition they deserve, globally.
