A Swedish-Kenyan company, ROAM has opened East Africa’s largest electric motorcycle plant known as ROAM park. This park sits on a 10,000 sqm facility and it forms ROAM’s new headquarter and battery lab.
The company was formerly known as OpiBus and they announced a deal over electric buses made in Africa in the summer of last year. Within this time, they already had plans for the motorcycle, now the time has come to actually make more of the electric motorbikes called Roam Air.
This new park in Nairobi has an annual production capacity of 50,000 motorcycles. Brett Mangel, Chief Operations Officer who formerly worked at Tesla stated “Moving ahead with this new production facility represents a significant step forward in bringing sustainable mobility solutions to Kenya. With some of the brightest talent, key partners, and access to a good infrastructure and logistics network, Roam is confident that this new location is a step in the right direction.”
Their new plant is located at Mombasa Road overlooking the Nairobi National Park. It houses production, distribution, and storage operations creating a technology hub. There are over 150 staff who work there in design, engineering, and production.
This company which was founded in 2017 has now set out to become the first company to deliver locally-produced electric motorcycles and buses. According to them, their motorcycles will be assembled in collaboration with local partners, while some manufacturing processes will be carried out somewhere in the region.
This company aims to achieve its 50,000 production capacity while staying carbon-neutral in the assembly process. The engineers and technicians will use the facility to improve efficiency and safety in the assembly process while improving overall quality.
Japheth Ruttoh, the Head of Production at Roam, expressed his pride in the team’s work during this phase of expansion. “It’s exciting to envision the improvements in production efficiency we will achieve and the new jobs that will be created as we continue to grow,” he said.
