- CTIA scoops the award for the eighth consecutive time.
For the eighth consecutive time, Cape Town International Airport (CTIA) won the ‘Best Airport in Africa’ and the third consecutive award for ‘Best Airport Staff in Africa’ at the Skytrax World Airport Awards on 15th March 2023 at the Passenger Terminal EXPO in Amsterdam.
Skytrax is an international aviation research organization that conducts the world’s largest Airport Customer Satisfaction survey known as the World Airport Survey which was launched in 1999. It is regarded as a quality benchmark for the world airport industry used in assessing customer service and facilities across over 500 airports. It is usually held every year.
Cape Town International Airport topped the list of Best Airports for 2023. South Africa’s Durban King Shaka, Johannesburg Airport, and Bloemfontein were second, third, and tenth on the list respectively. Other airports that were listed include Casablanca, Mauritius, Marrakech, Addis Ababa, Kigali Nairobi airports.
The CTIA is located in the Western Cape of South Africa. It is the second-busiest airport in South Africa and the fourth-busiest in Africa, as it is the primary international airport serving the city of Cape Town. CTIA is the only airport in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area that offers scheduled passenger services.
Speaking on the occasion, the Western Cape, Alan Winde said, “this latest accolade is further proof of the outstanding standards and level of service we foster in the Western Cape”. He added that “the award also confirms that our tourism facilities are world-class, befitting our province being a top location for visitors, domestically and from abroad”.
He said that the tourism industry’s strong growth is crucial to the country’s economic development, recovery, and job creation, as he also complimented the leadership and personnel of the airport, noting that once again they are extremely proud of them.
The minister of finance and economic development, Mireille Wenger also extended his sincere gratitude to the airport administration and every employee for their assistance in securing these honors. He said that winning the eighth “Best Airport in Africa” award will undoubtedly help to expand the tourism industry because CTIA is a key facilitator of the sector.
In 2022, the Western Cape ranked as the top-performing province in South Africa, with respect to the overseas markets, recording the highest number of tourist arrivals of all provinces at 697,132, according to an overview of Western Cape Tourism Performance.
