The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network annually publishes the World Happiness Report which determines which country is the happiest and which is the unhappiest. It uses statistical analysis to determine the results.
The 10th edition of the World Happiness Report has just been released, the report ranks 146 countries in their overall happiness and highlights which countries are the happiest and unhappiest. A researcher involved in the report said, “The World Happiness Report is changing the conversation about progress and well-being. It provides important snapshots of how people around the world feel about the overall quality of their lives.”
In this research, Mauritius ranked as the happiest country in the region, which is a result of its relatively high-income levels.
Using the Gallup World Poll results, Mauritius was ranked first in Africa with an overall score of 6.071 out of 10. It’s worth noting that Mauritius became a High-Income country in July 2020, but slipped back to its Upper-Middle-Income status in 2021 because of the global pandemic.
This is the sixth year in a row Mauritius has been named Africa’s happiest country. It is also Africa’s most developed country with free healthcare and education, it provides free transport for students and old people, and it has a monthly minimum wage of $251.
Asides from ranking first in Africa, Mauritius ranked 52nd globally. The remaining countries in the top ten in Africa were Libya with 5.330, Ivory Coast with 5.235, South Africa with 5.194, Gambia with 5.164, Algeria with 5.122, Liberia with 5.122, Congo with 5.075, Morocco, and Mozambique with 5.060 and 5.048 respectively.
These happiness reports are based on life evaluations as a stable measure of the quality of people’s lives. The result from the report further consolidates the position of Mauritius as a destination of choice for working and living.
