His win represents a political earthquake in Colorado Springs.
Nigerian man Yemi Mobolade based in the United States has written his name in the pages of history by becoming the first African to be appointed as the Mayor of Colorado Springs, a municipality in Colorado, United States.
His victory at the polls has no strings with any political experience. Yemi Mobolade is a US immigrant and a businessman originally from Nigeria. He leads the city in a political revolution to become the Mayor, defeating Wayne Williams in the city’s runoff contest on Tuesday.
Mobolade’s win is long known as a conservative stronghold that represents a political earthquake in Colorado Springs as he is not affiliated to any political party although Wayne is recognized as Republican.
The Colorado Sun reported on Tuesday that as of 7:15 pm Mobolade had received 57% of the vote while Williams had 43% and at 7:30 pm, Mobolade opponent had conceded. Shortly before 9 pm, the second batch of results was released and the percentages had not moved.
Following his installation as Colorado’s 42nd Mayor, Mobolade will succeed Mayor John Suthers, the former federal prosecutor, and Colorado Attorney General whose term was limited.
The mayor was very excited over his win, “wow, wow, I am speechless, ” he said to kick off his victory speech. “This is our win. We are Colorado Springs. It is a new day in our beloved city. Do you believe that? Colorado Springs will become an inclusive, culturally rich, economically prosperous, safe, and vibrant city”, Mobolade added.
In 2010 when he moved to Colorado Springs, he immediately became a leader in the business community. Two popular restaurants in Colorado’s second-largest city; the Wild Goose Meeting House and Good Neighbours Meeting House were co-founded by Mobolade. He served as its small business development administrator.
Mobolade also held the position of vice president of business retention and expansion for the Colorado Springs Chamber and Economic Development Corporation. He is married with three children.
