In a significant stride towards the technological future, MTN Uganda, the leading telecom operator in the country, has unveiled its pioneering 5G network. The launch which took place on Friday, made MTN Uganda to become the first 5G network operator in East Africa.
The network’s base coverage has been created in the Lugogo and Bugolobi suburbs of Kampala, signifying a significant development in Uganda’s communications environment.
MTN Uganda has established itself as an early adopter of this cutting-edge technology with 125 5G sites currently deployed across key locations. The 700MHz, 2.3GHz, 2.6GHz, and an E-band spectrum were among the essential spectrums that the Uganda Communications Commission awarded the telecom operator access to.
With this allotment, a new era of seamless connectivity will be ushered in together with unmatched data speeds and exceptionally low latency.
The CEO of MTN Uganda, Sylvia Mulinge, expressed her enthusiasm for the network launch and its potential effects. “We are thrilled to introduce the 5G network in Uganda, reaffirming our commitment to transforming the digital landscape,” stated Mulinge.
She went on to say that the initial network demonstrations in Lugogo and Bugolobi are just the start and that there are plans to fully cover Kampala with 5G by the end of 2024, followed by an expansion to all major cities within the following two years.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, attended the opening event and spoke about the 5G network’s enormous significance for Uganda.
Dr. Baryomunsi emphasized how this cutting-edge technology is positioned to redefine not only how social media is used, but also act as a catalyst for profound economic and social change.
“The advent of the 5G network is a momentous initiative that will empower households across Uganda and foster innovation,” remarked Dr. Baryomunsi.
The over 15 million people that makeup MTN Uganda’s subscriber base demonstrate the company’s dedication to advancing the country’s digital transformation. As the 5G network spreads across the nation, new opportunities for commerce, communication, and technical innovation are anticipated.
