On Sunday, Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed declared that the Grand Renaissance Dam’s fourth and final filling had been successfully completed.
Tensions in the region over the project have been caused by Egypt and Sudan, who live downstream.
Abiy announced this via a tweet on social media network X, formerly known as Twitter.
Abiy Ahmed addressed the many obstacles encountered during the dam’s construction, including internal issues and outside pressures, in his remarks. He expressed his appreciation for their teamwork and divine direction in getting to this point.
Abiy expressed assurance in their capacity to carry out their intentions as well.
Since Ethiopia began work on the enormous $4.2-billion dam in 2011, it has become the center of regional conflicts. Addis Abeba views the dam as essential. Egypt is worried that the project will cut down on the amount of water it receives from the Nile.
After a break of over two and a half years, negotiations are currently being held in an effort to reach a deal that takes into account the interests and concerns of all three parties.
Hani Sewilam, the Egyptian minister of irrigation, urged a halt to unilateral acts in this situation.
