The winner of the 2023 Irish Life Dublin City Marathon has crossed the finish line setting a new course record, after running the 26.2-mile race in wet and rainy conditions.
Over 22,500 people entered the 2023 marathon, which is in its 42nd year. It is Ireland’s largest marathon event and the fourth largest in Europe. The race, which started at Fitzwilliam Square in the city’s center, saw participants running through Dublin, into the Phoenix Park, taking in areas including Inchicore and Terenure, and finishing at Merrion Square.
Kemal Husen from Ethiopia won this year’s marathon in two hours six minutes and 52 seconds, a new record for the Irish Life Dublin Marathon.
Second place was Geofrey Kusuro from Uganda who crossed the line after two hours, 10 minutes, and 45 seconds.
Stephen Scullion was the first Irish person across the line and came in third place. Mr. Scullion of Clonliffe Harriers AC ran 26.2 miles in two hours, 11 minutes, and 51 seconds and claimed the national title.
Some Negash from Ethiopia was the first woman across the line, with a run of two hours, 26 minutes, and 22 seconds. The second woman across the line was Joan Kipyatich of Kenya, who ran the marathon in two hours, 27 minutes, and four seconds.
Genet Habela Abdurkadir from Ethiopia was the third woman across the line with a race time of two hours, 27 minutes, and 49 seconds.
Ann Marie McGlynn of Letterkenny A.C. was the first Irish woman to finish the marathon after two hours, 34 minutes, and 13 seconds and claimed the national title.
For Kemal Husen, this was his second-ever marathon. Kemal Husen beat over one minute off his first record from earlier this year. Excitedly, he said, “I’m so happy. I did not expect to run this time”
Negash’s compatriot, Genet Habela Abdurkadir finished under two hours, 27 minutes, and 49 seconds for the third spot.
