The 34 edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 is ongoing and it began on January 11th, 2024 with Ivory Coast as the host nation. The tournament began with the host nation, Ivory Coast taking on Guinea Bissau in the knockout stage of Group A.
At Alassane Ouattara Stadium on January 13, Ivory Coast opens the African Cup of Nations tournament by winning the match against its opponent. Seko Mohammed Fofana opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the match and after that, Jean-Philippe Krasso doubled the lead 13 minutes into the second half.
On Sunday, January 14, Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea, played a draw match at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan. Iban Salvador netted a surprise opener for Equatorial Guinea against the run of play with a well-worked goal. Still, the lead lasted only two minutes before Victor Osimhen scored a first-half equalizer leading to a draw.
The action continues in the Group A stage of the AFCON tournaments with Equatorial Guinea taking on Guinea Bissau on 18th January as the Djurtus lost in a 2-0 match to the Ivorians in the tournament’s opening game.
Host Ivory Coast next meets Nigeria in a supposedly crucial clash on Thursday, while Equatorial Guinea.
In a draw match -2-2, Egypt went on head to head with Mozambique as the first game under the Group B stage. Mostafa Mohamed scored the first goal for Egypt four minutes into the match. A few minutes into the second half of the match, Mozambique equalized with their first goal by Witi. In the 58th minute, Mozambique took the lead netting another goal by Clésio Baúque. However, the match came to a draw after Egypt’s Mohamed Saleh scored the nation a second goal during extra time of the match.
Also in Group B, Cape Verde defeated Ghana in a victory match of 1-2. Egypt takes on Ghana on 18th January at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.
In Group C, the undefeatable Lions of Teranga, the Senegalese national team beat the Gambia in a 3-0 match, retaining their title as undefeated. Cameroon and Guinea played a 1-1 in their match.
