The official teaser for the upcoming documentary series “Freeman,” based on the Igbo apprenticeship system, has been released by Showmax.

 The “Freeman” teaser takes a look at the Igbo apprenticeship system, showcasing affluent businessmen who approach parents to mentor young individuals in trade. These mentors play a vital role in guiding apprentices on their vocational journey, revealing a dynamic relationship. The teaser offers a snapshot of this connection, emphasizing cultural nuances and traditions inherent in the Igbo apprenticeship system.

“Freemen” features esteemed Igbo entrepreneurs such as Dr. Anene Okeke, Dr. Cosmas Maduka (Coscharis), Obinna Iyiegbu (Obi Cubana), Ndubuisi Ekekwe, Okey Japan, Bartholomew Duru Nwanguma, and his son Peter Nwanguma, among other notable figures. Throughout the series, these influential business leaders share personal anecdotes and reflections on how the Igbo apprenticeship system has played a transformative role in shaping their careers and fostering entrepreneurial success. The documentary, co-produced by rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, known as ILLBLiSS (King of Boys), also features his contribution to the series’ soundtrack. “Freemen” promises an intimate exploration of the profound impact of mentorship within the Igbo cultural context, unveiling the narratives behind the success stories of these prominent entrepreneurs.

Busola Tejumola, MultiChoice’s Executive Head of Content and West Africa Channels conveyed in a press release that the “Freemen” project aims to showcase Nigeria’s rich culture. She emphasized that beyond being a documentary on the Igbo Apprenticeship System, it serves as a spotlight on the nation’s diverse narrative and heritage. Tejumola expressed excitement at Showmax for the opportunity to narrate the vibrant story of a system that has transcended cultural boundaries.

Daro Umaigba, the director and co-producer of “Freemen,” echoed Tejumola’s enthusiasm. Umaigba highlighted that the documentary opens a window into the world of the Igbo Apprenticeship System, providing viewers with an intimate look at how astute business minds are nurtured and developed. He underlined that “Freemen” goes beyond showcasing Igbo cultural heritage; it also serves as a valuable resource for business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs seeking mentorship insights.

The documentary is meticulously structured into four distinct parts, offering an in-depth exploration of the Igbo apprenticeship system. These segments include the Pick-Up and Negotiations Period, Trial Period, Solidification of Agreement and Work Period, and Settlement Period. Each phase contributes to providing a comprehensive and unique perspective on the journey of apprentices, offering insights into the intricacies of their development and the cultural significance embedded in each stage.

Starting February 12, “Freemen” will be available exclusively for streaming on Showmax, and new episodes will be released every Wednesday.
