In celebration of Nobel Laureate Prof Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday, President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the National Arts Theatre in Iganmu, Lagos, to the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts.
In a tribute to Soyinka, Tinubu praised the literary icon’s remarkable achievements, dedication to human dignity and justice, and his impact on the literary world, Nigeria, Africa, and the globe. He described Soyinka as a “colossus” and a “true renaissance person” with diverse talents.
Tinubu highlighted Soyinka’s courage in speaking out against oppression and injustice, from apartheid to racism, and his personal risks taken for the sake of Nigeria, including his attempt to broker peace during the civil war and his subsequent detention.
The President expressed his delight in joining global admirers to celebrate Soyinka’s milestone birthday, noting that the renaming of the National Theatre is a fitting tribute to a national treasure and global icon.
The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts will serve as a testament to Soyinka’s enduring legacy and contributions to Nigerian culture and the world.
