Women farmers in Rivers State are prepared to significantly reduce food prices by 50 percent with adequate support for farm implements and mechanization.

The state government, however, has vowed to exclude what it terms ‘portfolio farmers,’ emphasizing that its agricultural support is targeted at genuine farmers.

Members of the Women in Farming and Agro-Allied Support Network (WIFAASN), during a solidarity visit to the Government House in Port Harcourt, expressed their desire for mechanized farming to enhance food sufficiency in the state. Glory Coker, the national coordinator of WIFAASN, highlighted their intention to lower the cost of living by halving the prices of essential commodities such as eggs and garri through farming initiatives supported by the government.

“We are farmers already, but we seek to transition to mechanized farming in Rivers State. With government assistance, we aim to reduce market prices significantly,” she stated, underscoring their need for machinery, fertilizer, and seedlings.

Ihuoma Eze, the state coordinator of WIFAASN, announced plans for the launch of the state chapter on July 20, 2024, and appealed for logistical support to ensure its success.

In response, Governor Sim Fubara assured that the state would roll out agricultural packages in the next budget cycle, targeting authentic farmers rather than what he termed ‘portfolio farmers.’ He affirmed agriculture as a top priority in the 2025 budget, emphasizing inclusivity and fairness in the distribution of support.

Represented by George Nweake, the Head of Service of Rivers State, Governor Fubara acknowledged the state’s agricultural potential, noting past neglect and underscoring ongoing efforts to revitalize the sector.

He commended the dedication of the WIFAASN members to enhancing food sufficiency and encouraged them to engage with the Ministry of Agriculture to integrate into the government’s agricultural initiatives.

Victor Kii, the Commissioner for Agriculture in the state, expressed gratitude for the visit, recognizing the organization’s commitment to the state’s welfare.
