Seychelles Hosts Inaugural IFBB Event.

Seychelles will host the 2023 IFBB International Grand Prix for the first time with the participation of over 20 athletes vying for the top prize. 

The competition, which is being done in collaboration between the International Fitness and Bodybuilding Federation (IFBB) and local body Seychelles Elite Pro Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, will take place on Saturday, at the Berjaya Beau Vallon Beach Resort.

The chairperson of the Seychelles Elite Pro Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Chantal Pinchon, told SNA that “it was during the IFBB congress last year, that we met with the president, and there the idea of Seychelles hosting an IFBB event came around and was agreed upon.”  

The event will start at 6 p.m. and eight participants from Seychelles, six men, and two women have already confirmed their participation. Savio Larue, Elicks Rapide, Jean-Luc Belle, Andy Anthony, and Derrick Mensah will compete among the ladies, while Shereen Azemia and Lindsay Payet will compete.

Pinchon explained that while this tournament is reserved for amateur bodybuilders, Ziad Meckdachi, who retired as a professional, will not be able to compete.

“There will be seven IFBB pro cards up for grabs, to the winners of each category. Getting an IFBB Pro Card means the bodybuilder becomes part of the elite. At this point you’ve made it, and have the opportunity to follow a genuine career as a professional bodybuilder, earning a decent income by competing and winning,” she said.

There will be six categories for men – bodybuilding, physique, classic physique, classic bodybuilding, junior classic bodybuilding, and junior men’s physique.

The ladies will compete in the bikini fitness, and bikini physique, as well as in the fit model categories.

Pinchon said that one of the advantages of Seychelles hosting the competition is that the participants will not have to deal with the expenses of going abroad.

She said she was hoping to get more local participants.

“I want the athletes to be more serious with the sport, where they have to ensure that they are ready in time for such competitions,” said Pinchon, who revealed that Seychelles will in fact hold a second international competition on June 22, 2024.

Tickets for the competition cost SCR300 ($22) while those wishing to attend the competition and the buffet dinner must pay SCR1200 ($90).


Ethiopia Set to Take Third Spot in Cocoa Exportation.

On Thursday, August 4th, there was a discussion with the media leaders where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed Ethiopia’s ambition to become the world’s third-largest exporter of coffee. They are currently ranked as the 8th largest coffee exporter globally and they have been diligently working towards this goal of becoming third-largest globally. 

In recent years, millions of coffee seedlings have been planted in the country, reflecting a strong commitment to the industry’s growth. The Prime Minister expressed his hope that within the next two to three years, Ethiopia will successfully ascend to the coveted position of the third-largest exporter of coffee beans.


In 2021, Oromia signaled the continued expansion of seedling coffee and the replacement of decades-old trees. In its recent article, the World Bank (WB) said that almost 80 percent of Ethiopia’s 1 million hectares of coffee trees were underproductive because the trees were not trimmed often enough.

According to this article, the quality of Ethiopian coffee isn’t the problem. About 95% of production from the country’s diverse coffee varieties is organic, traditionally cultivated without the use of pesticides and fertilizers. Demand isn’t the issue either. The article, however, questions, why is Ethiopia’s coffee productivity lagging behind other leading coffee-producing countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. As the research shows, the problem boils down to a lack of pruning.


Shimelis Abdisa, President of the Oromia region, back then said that, unlike the preceding trend for the past couple of years, the regional administration has given fundamental attention to bean production and productivity. He pointed out how there was no investment or special attention to coffee, it was only generating revenue. “In general, previously, the Ethiopian government was only generating revenue from coffee but not investing in it. The farmer was the only actor in the total production activity,” he said.


The WB said that the low productivity of Ethiopia’s coffee trees poses an obvious problem for the more than 2 million smallholder farmers dependent on coffee production for their livelihoods. Shimelis said due to different reason including the trading scheme, the farmers’ revenue from the bean have been declaimed which led them to cut the coffee bush and replace them with alternative profitable crops.


“Based on understanding the farmers and the sector challenges, the regional government is taking action to come up with a solution,” the regional President said. “In our region for the last two years, we have introduced three major changes in the sector. We have improved the marketing system by creating alternative trading for Ethiopian Commodity Exchange by issuing an export license for the farmer enabling them for direct export which also contributed to reducing the illegal trade,” Shimelis told Capital.

“The new trading plays a key role. It has shown positive results for instance the price of red cherry which was 12 birr per kg in the past has now reached 30 birr because of the new scheme,” he explained.

The other initiative introduced in the past two years was rejuvenating and replacing the aged and unproductive coffee trees with new seedlings. The regional President said that the coffee trees in the region are aged up to 40 years, which is a factor in the small harvest.


“Rejuvenate existing trees by trimming and replacing the old trees and seedling new coffee trees in new areas has been conducted for the past two years,” he said.

“In 2019, we have planted over 800 million new coffee seedlings, 900 million in last year and this rainy season we will plant 1.1 billion coffee trees in the region,” Shimelis elaborated.

The World Bank article said that different initiatives have been involved to elevate the challenges like Stumping involves pruning older and less productive trees down to just a stump. “This stimulates the growth of new sprouts that develop into new branches within a few months,” it added.


According to the region’s plan, the target is increasing the coffee export by two folds minimum in the coming few years. “In the past budget year for instance for the first time in the region the coffee export has increased by 17 percent and this year it is expected to climb to 19 percent,” he explained.


In the coming budget year, the export is estimated to be boosted by 25 percent because the seedling that was planted two years ago will have started production.

The price increment at the farmer’s level under one of the three pillars of change for the sector has also discouraged the illegal market. The effect on the illegal channel is said to contribute to attaining the target set for the coming year.

Congo Fashion Show Hopes To Inspire Peace and Creativity

A fashion show was held in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo aimed at inspiring peace and creativity in conflict-ridden region.


Longing for peace, Goma workshop owner, Flore Mfuanani Nsukula, put the finishing touches on her newest collection to recognize the conflict-ridden Democratic Republic of Congo. In her words, “We want peace to be restored in our country, especially in North Kivu.” 


 “Through art, all colors that we will express, through our clothes, it will be full of emotions, trying to explain what we are going through in our country.”


For decades, more than 100 armed groups in eastern Congo have been fighting for control of important natural resources. There are frequent mass killings, and the bloodshed has caused a refugee exodus.


In lieu of violence, the Liputa fashion show on Saturday night promoted peace and creativity within the region. 


According to organizers, it is an opportunity to send a message of peace and peaceful cooperation during a time of heightened tensions.


Creative stylists, models and designers from Cameroon, Senegal, Burundi, France and the U.S. took to the catwalk in hopes of spreading joy and beauty in the wake of a tumultuous chapter in the Congo’s history.


Cameroonian fashion designer Délia Ndougou stated, “Africans must be one, be united. It is true we  have a very wide cultural diversity, but this diversity must bring us together.” She presented a collection inspired by her national flag.


“We really wanted to convey joy in the clothes, peace in the clothes, very cheerful styles, a question of making the world smile,” Chadrac Lumumba, a creative stylist from Kinshasa added. 


Flore’s collection sought to recommit to the quest for peace in the area, while also showcasing the fashion industry’s continuous potential in the Congo. 


Organizer David Ngulu knew the show was, not only to sell these images of creators, but to show that in Africa and in the DRC, peace is possible.


“We presented these collections, not only to sell the images of these creators, but to show that in Africa, in the DRC, the areas that are considered ‘red,’ we can do things there that we see in other countries that have peace,” says David Ngulu.


“I think that each creator contributed to love, peace and living together.”

Lesotho: Boot Camp to Mitigate Crime Rate.

  • Participants in this program will undergo a transformative journey for three weeks.

The government has put in the effort to tackle and mitigate the crime rate, ill-discipline, and lack of patriotism. The Lesotho Defence Force Youth Development has initiated a boot camp program for young people from the age of 14-22 years.

Lesotho’s military is made up of more than 100,000 young men and women. The country’s army is the second largest in Africa after South Africa. It is also the largest in South Africa, with more than 30,000 soldiers.

In a bid to address the pressing issues of rampant crime, ill-discipline, and lack of patriotism among the youth, the Lesotho Defence Force Youth Development has taken a proactive approach by introducing a rigorous boot camp program. This program is a 21-day-long program that has a unique funding model; it is paid for by the parents or guardian and sponsored by the business community and non-governmental organizations. This collaborative effort highlights the shared commitment to invest in the development and future success of Lesotho’s youth. By providing the necessary resources, both financial and mentorship-based, the program aims to create a nurturing environment for personal growth and character development.

This is the fourth cohort of the Lesotho Defence Force boot camp intake and for the next three weeks, the vibrant energy in these young men and women will be channeled into shaping a well-rounded member of the society.

For the three weeks of the program, the young participants of the Lesotho Defence Force boot camp will undergo a transformative journey. The program will focus on channeling their vibrant energy into building a solid foundation of discipline, integrity, and patriotism. There will be a combination of physical training, educational workshops, and character-building activities, the participants will be equipped with essential life skills, leadership qualities, and a sense of social responsibility. By fostering an environment that promotes teamwork, respect, and self-discipline, the boot camp strives to cultivate individuals who will contribute positively to their communities and become future leaders of Lesotho.

The boot camp program goes beyond just a training initiative, It symbolizes a powerful platform for youth empowerment and nation-building. By investing in the holistic development of young individuals, the program aims to create a generation that is equipped with the tools and values necessary to overcome challenges, make responsible choices, and contribute meaningfully to the development of Lesotho. Ghana Declares Efforts to Boost Sustainable Blue Economy.

During a two-day national ocean economy summit, Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declared that his nation is committed to creating a sustainable blue economy for the benefit of all citizens.


The President made the call at the opening of a two-day maiden National Blue Economy Summit, held in Accra, from 31st May-1st June 2023 on the theme “Our Ocean’s Heath, Our Prosperity, Our Planet’s Security”. The Summit is organized by the SDGs Advisory Unit of the Office of the President, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Ghana, and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It aimed to mobilize transformative actions to sustainably manage the ocean towards SDGs achievement.

Akufo-Addo stressed that the ocean offers a fantastic chance to hasten the growth of the West African nation and enhance the well-being of its citizens and that the administration is creating policies and initiatives to guarantee a sustainable ocean economy.


“The ocean presents an incredible opportunity to accelerate our beloved country’s development agenda to improve our people’s well-being. The ocean must be at the heart of all our decision-making. We must walk the walk by making a greater commitment to the ocean”, he noted.


In order to address maritime threats, manage marine resources sustainably, generate significant national revenue, and ultimately raise the standard of living for our people, he said, “As part of the process, we have initiated the national integrated maritime strategy.”


The president emphasized the need to ensure higher investments into the new sector, noting that very little money moved into the blue economy despite an increase in private investment over the past ten years.

Akufo-Addo thought that public-private partnerships may draw more private capital to the maritime industry and marine-based initiatives.


The SDGs Advisor at the Office of the President and the Sherpa to the President on Ocean Action, Dr. Eugene Owusu, in his welcome remarks at the Summit, called for urgent action to halt overfishing and ocean degradation.

“For humanity’s own survival, it is absolutely imperative that we come together to ensure sustainable and responsible stewardship of our oceans”, noted Dr. Owusu.


The summit, which was held under the banner of “our ocean’s health, our prosperity, and our planet’s security” and was organized by Ghana’s Sustainable Development Goals Advisory Unit in collaboration with the UNDP, drew in both national and international participants.


12 years a musician: Nigerian singer Davido, fans celebrate timelessness after ‘Back When’.

On the 7th of May 2023, fans, friends, and family of Nigerian Award-winning Afrobeats singer, David Adeleke, popular as Davido, celebrated his first 12 years of making music professionally. The commemoration took the world back to when his debut song, ‘Back When, which features the rave of that era – Naeto C, was released as the prime single heralding his first album. ‘Back When’, a song from his 2012 debut album ‘Omo Baba Olowo’, was produced in London by Davido himself while popular African music video director, Clarence Peters, shot and directed the video that was first uploaded online on the 9th of May 2011. The song rose to become one of the biggest hit songs from Africa at that time, marking his full induction into the entertainment industry.

Through a post shared on his Twitter handle, Davido expressed his appreciation to God for the 12-year ride, he described himself as God’s child. “12 years ago, today I dropped my first single. God’s child”, he wrote, stating how happy he is that people still accepted the album Timeless, which has been breaking records since its release, even after 12 years of putting out music.


While on tour recently, to sell his new Album, a brief chat he had with someone showed up online where the singer showed how happy he is to see people the world over accepting his new work of art, according to him, when compared to the previous Albums, Timeless got a good reception. He also mentioned that he has always felt people’s indifference to his earlier albums but Timeless rose to a different level. He said: “I’m happy that people accepted Timeless and I feel they always doubted my album. It’s a different feel for me because people have never accepted my album, so this is a fresh one for me…I haven’t felt this before”. The singer, and father, who had stayed away from social media for a while, just after the loss of his son, expressed satisfaction and optimism about his music and social media comeback.

He mentioned that the responses and positive reactions he has been receiving since TIMELESS dropped have been quite encouraging. Davido disclosed that he is just getting started, even though he admits that the journey has, so far, been heavy with breath-taking adventures. “This journey has been crazy, but we’re just getting started”: he says. He rose to prominence and popularity after he released ‘Dami Duro’, the second single from his debut studio album. Mr Eazi’s Zagadat Capital benefits from $1 billion Vydia sale deal.

Oluwatosin Ajibade, famously known as Mr Eazi, has recently stirred African News media and the rest of the world, with the recent sale of Vydia, the portfolio company in partnership with his venture capital fund, Zagadat Capital, for an astonishing $1 billion. The digital video and audio distribution company was acquired by American firm, Gamma, in an unprecedented transaction regarded by many as the biggest in Afrobeats, so far.


Gamma is a music and technology firm owned by former Apple Music Executive, Larry Jackson, who believes that Gamma’s vision is in seamless harmony with Vydia’s potential and capabilities, he is enthusiastic about the acquisition. He says “Vydia epitomizes the vision of Gamma as an ideas company.” Entertainment brands that have worked with Vydia include artists like Kanye West, Akon, Mr Eazi, and Anuel.




Jackson said about the acquisition: “Gamma is built with the flexibility and aptitude that creators need to connect with fans on all formats and across all channels – with transparency and no restriction. We are a progressive media company powered by the best-in-class content distribution and analytics software by way of our Vydia acquisition.”


Beyond a rewarding career in Music, Mr Eazi’s influence in the business world has continued to grow. He set up and runs the music distribution platform emPawa, to promote Afro-music. The platform has worked with several artists including Namenj, Fave, Joeboy, Bella Alubo, and Mr. Eazi himself.




Zagadat Capital, established in 2021, has speedily built a reputation for its strategic investments in different tech companies. The companies include home services provider Eden Life, remittance-based loaning firm Paisa, African fintech company Pawapay, and, newly, the South African basketball team, CapeTown Tigers. Zagadat Capital’s portfolio shows that Mr Eazi is committed to the promotion of innovation and advancement in the African tech network. Zagadat Capital’s early investments centred on music tech companies. The companies include ticketing platform SHOOBS, Mr Eazi’s enterprise emPawa, and American music distribution service Vydia.


Remarkably, emPawa used the services of Vydia before Mr Eazi made any financial investments into the platform, indicating that, from the onset, he was quite confident in Vydia’s potential. The success of this notable deal reinforces Mr Eazi’s status as a dominant figure in music, tech, and the business world. His impact on the global entertainment scene, as a many-sided entrepreneur, is undisputed. The acquisition of Vydia by Gamma will reform the music distribution scene, giving artists quality platforms and gears to reach new markets as they enlarge their careers.

Stars headlining nominations for the highly awaited 9th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA, 2023 include Chidi Mokeme, Tobi Bakare, Bimbo Ademoye, and others. AfriSQuare gathered that digital content creators in Nollywood, and in Africa generally, have also earned recognition; this shows an expansion in the annual event’s scope, which traditionally recognizes outstanding performances in film, television, and entertainment.  The nominees are spread across more than 30 award categories, some of the categories, about ten of them, are open to the public; voters from the general public can choose their preferred nominees, while some other categories are to be decided by a panel of judges set up by the organizers. The event itself is scheduled to hold from the 18th to the 20th of May 2023, in Lagos State, Nigeria, and will be broadcast live on Africa Magic channels.

Davido’s ‘Timeless’ debuts remarkably on Billboard 200, streaming platforms.

On the 31st of March 2023, Nigerian ace afrobeats musician, Davido, stirred global and African news platforms with the release of his keenly expected fourth album, titled ‘Timeless’. In the week of release, the album achieved ground-breaking triumph; it broke several records within the continent and internationally. ‘Timeless’ recently debuted on United States’ Album chart, Billboard 200. On Apple Music Nigeria, Davido’s ‘Timeless’ broke the previously existing record of the biggest debut week for any album on Apple Music Nigeria, and while breaking one record, it equally, set a new record for the most streams on a debut day for an African album on Apple Music globally. Davido’s ‘Timeless’, on Audiomack, had more than 12 million streams in its first 24 hours, more than any other album in Audiomack’s history. Also, its release week is the biggest release week on record for any African album in the history of Audiomack. The Album waxed powerful in its release week, reinforcing Davido’s place as one of Africa’s contemporary music greats. Côte d’Ivoire’s fashion week showcases 30 African designers.

It was all flashiness and beauty at the 16th annual Afrik Fashion Week which took place this week in Côte d’Ivoire’s commercial capital, Abidjan.




The major fashion event brought together 30 designers and 60 models from several African countries, around the theme “Youth, Fashion and Cultural Diversity”.




“We think that Africa and even Côte d’Ivoire deserve to host a fashion week and for this edition, we tried to put our best foot forward by inviting African designers to share the stage with local designers,” said Isabelle Anoh, the event organizer.




And it wasn’t just about clothing. Handbags Jewelry, shoes – there was plenty to be seen and enjoyed by all.




For fashion designer Nancy, the event was also an opportunity for someone like herself, who wants to enter the fashion world, to learn and gain a little more visibility.




“Through fashion shows we see what others create and through that we get inspiration. And for us also to exchange with other stylists and other designers and of course to make ourselves known,” she said.




The event was widely seen as a wonderful opportunity to network with others in the industry from across the continent.




“It’s an opportunity for me to meet several designers, to get to know different models and creators. And also, participating in this event has been a great joy for me and it allows me to value my work,” said make-up artist, Julianna Gnépa.

Seretse Khama Ian Khama (rtd), former Nigerian President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, and many other prominent Africans will be honored. 




According to the organizers, Heritage Times (HT), The African Heritage Concert and Awards will celebrate and honor distinguished African personalities from several African nations, who have dignified themselves through incredible successes across the globe. 




This, the organizers said, has become imperative to foster the African culture of excellence and promote Afrocentrism.

  • Young hairstylist, Safari Martin, has defined himself as an unusually creative barber.
  • His regular social media videos have drawn attention to the precision with which he presents his creative haircuts.

Either by word of mouth or by watching some of his delightful videos on Instagram one may have come across the thrilling tale of 23-year-old Martin Safari, a creative young man who, in his spoofs, cuts clients’ hairs with all types of tools, hammers inclusive. Surprising as it may, Safari finds hammers, knives, forks, and other weird tools useful in doing a remarkable job.


In his videos, actually acted out, the young barber dresses for each part, sometimes he simulates a mechanic trying to fix a spoilt car, other times he explores other roles. Safari mentioned that, as a child, he always imagined himself living the life of an extraordinary artist using pencils, brushes, pallets, and paint. But his parents had nudged him into the sciences because they expected a doctor to emerge from their son.


Many years later, neither medicine nor artistry has kept Safari gainfully engaged; though he has found a unique way to bring art into his work.


Safari talked about how he obeyed his parents at first and closed in on the sciences, deserting his interest in arts until, one afternoon, in his boarding school in Uganda, a friend asked for help with tidying up their hair because a proper haircut outside the school was quite beyond most students’ budget. That was destiny’s call; Safari answered the call wholeheartedly. From then on, without fully understanding what he was getting into, he found a new interest. For him, it continued as a simple hobby, just a courteous service to his peers. But, when the demand for this hobby of his began to swell, he joined heads with his school friends, and they smuggled in a clipper after which he began to attach stipends to his services.


Most of his needs in school were met and he stopped asking his parents for pocket money. He explained that “when I went back home for the holidays, I decided to take it to another level. I subscribed to some of the biggest barbers’ YouTube channels and took some online courses. “Safari substantially added to his skills during holidays so much that his school noted his improved talent and hired him as the official school barber. Just after his graduation, he set up a small-scale barbershop in that Ugandan neighborhood. Eventually, he returned home to Rwanda.


Safari has gone ahead to carve a brand in Kigali as one of the most skilled barbers in town. He leverages on the internet; he picks ideas, shares his unique works, as well as secure clients’ appointments online, through his Instagram handle, @safro_fades. Currently, he does not operate from a fixed address, he has niched himself as a pro barber who is accessible online and available for home services. Safro, as he is fondly called, charges from 15,000 Rwandan franc upward; his distinct home package goes for about 20, 000 Rwandan franc and above, depending on factors like location, clients’ preferred style, and other cost influences like dyeing, tinting, etc.


Averagely, Safari’s cuts usually take about 40 to 50 minutes. He believes he is still an artist and his art manifests in his haircuts, he says “I think my talent didn’t fully disappear. People tell me that they see my art just by looking at how I present my content and the way I make a haircut. This gives me the ultimate satisfaction”. He says that the ‘beauty of existing in this era’ contributes immeasurably to some of his successes in the barbing trade. “I can imagine that if this was a decade ago, I would just be some other barber. But because of technology and social media platforms, through proper content creation, I’m able to reach my desired audience, willing to pay adequately for my services,” he pointed out.


While a lot of people see Safari as a skilled barber, he looks beyond the trade, he works to establish himself as a captivating content creator, consistent and creative. “Most of my clients are Rwandans, but considering their conservative nature, I usually have a hard time convincing them to let me post them on my online page,” he mentioned while explaining probable reasons for a possible delay in his global exposure. Safari opines that anyone can prosper in any career path they pick to pursue, whether they originally dreamt of it or not. He admonishes young African talents by saying “make sure you master your craft, attract and keep your clients coming back and then promote your craft and then, make money.”

Kenya leads world tea production, exportation.

  • Because tea is in high demand globally, efforts are being made by primary growers of the product to double up on production.

  • Kenya, though not necessarily a major consumer, has sustained its position as a leading grower of different types of tea in the world.
  • Other than water, tea follows as a highly consumed beverage; next to China and India, Kenya is big on the global tea production stage.


Next to water, tea is the world’s most consumed drink; this accounts for its high demand across the world, and Kenya has stood tall as the only African country to be listed in the top ten tea manufacturing countries worldwide, and the biggest global exporter of black tea particularly.


Tea has remained a major cash crop grown in Kenya and has been a leading source of foreign exchange earnings for the country. Regarding cultivation of the leaves, Kenya produced over 400 thousand tons of tea in 2022 thanks to the estimated 500,000 small-scale Kenyan farmers that grow tea across the country on approximately 236,000 hectares of land. The country’s regions that are famous for tea distribution include the Nyambene Hills, Kericho region, and Nandi. Many teas are produced in Asia and being the birthplace of the product, it is understandable that China sits on the very top of the ladder as the leader of the industry, in terms of production and even consumption. However, the input, innovation, and significant contribution of this younger participant in the industry, Kenya, has quickly earned it a spot as the largest exporter of black tea in the world.


Although Kenya is in Africa, its location close to the equator positions it for sufficient sunlight and ideal conditions to grow the plants. Other environmental factors, including high elevation in the mountains and an excessively rich volcanic soil, have made it favorable for the plants to thrive. This has subsequently enabled tea farmers in Kenya to grow an immense amount of the product and harvest some of the best teas the world has reckoned with. Kenya produces a lot of black tea and several other types of teas including green tea, yellow tea, and white tea grown on request by key tea producers, but one unique tea native to the country is the Kenyan Purple Tea. Purple leaf tea was developed in Kenya about 25 years ago. It is called the purple leaf tea because of its signature purple and healthy-looking leaves with high levels of antioxidants. It is believed to contain even more age-defying antioxidants than the green tea with potentials to curb cancer and other ailments.


This unique-tasting tea carries quite a smooth tang; rather than having a grassy taste, it has more of melon and honey flavors. Many also love and prefer the purple tea because it is low on caffeine, so it works well for a quick afternoon shot of antioxidant.  Tea lovers have found that adding some lemon juice to purple tea changes its color to peach or even gold. China produces about 2,400,000 tons of tea yearly, this puts the country on the number one spot among biggest producers, exporters, and, to some extent, consumers of tea in the world. It exports 40% of the total tea in world. India is popular for being the second highest tea producing country in the world accounting for about 1,250,000 tons annually.


Kenya got acquainted with tea in 1903, it became a profit-oriented venture in 1924 when Malcom Bell stepped in for the company Brooke Bond, and it has been a key stapple in the African country ever since. The annual tea production in Kenya exceeds 500,000 tons, this makes it the third biggest producers globally; and number one producer of black tea globally. In Mombasa, a coastal city in southeastern Kenya along the Indian Ocean, tea is sold through automated public auction for an international community. In October 2011, tea was averagely actioned at $3.22 per kilogram.

Ghanian teachers’ colorful line of duty.

  • Ghana has joined other African countries that pay attention to cultural attires in the workplace.


  • Teachers in a district of the west African country adopted this initiative and have since pushed it joyfully.


  • The idea is to reinforce the creativity in the clothing of Africans.

Following conventions in other parts of Africa, teachers in the Hohoe Metropolis, Volta region, Ghana, have adopted the wearing of native Ghanaian and African clothing on the last Friday of every month. This creativity, introduced in 2022, is to encourage the wearing of native Ghanaian garments and to fortify collective bonds through culture and tradition.


Ms Janet Valerie Datsa, the Hohoe Municipal Director of Education, started this to merge culture and education into one since they were hitherto mutually separated. Other than boosting culture, it also fosters unity among teachers from a wide range of ethnic groups and backgrounds. Teachers in the Metropolis have followed the initiative religiously.




Every last Friday of each month, countless school grounds in the Municipality are continually awash with beautiful and assorted styles of African prints and native wears. Workers at the education offices also take part in this healthy showcase of culture.


Mr Samuel Kaletsi, one of the teachers at the St. Francis College of Education Demonstration Primary School, expressed his happiness with the creativity. “First of all, let me thank Madam Valerie- I mean our Municipal Director for her singular efforts in promoting cultural awareness and unity among the teaching class. This initiative has really helped in giving meaning to the true spirit of Africanism. In fact, our learners (pupils/students) are also benefiting from it as they are becoming enlightened on the cultural uniqueness of their beloved country, Ghana,” he said.


Other teachers applauded the proponent of the initiative for her sincere efforts in strengthening the ties since teachers in the municipality come from many parts of the country. They endorsed the idea as one that would nurture unity and national cohesion.


The main advocate of the idea, Madam Valerie Janet Datsa, said: “Well, I am so humbled by all of the praises being showered on me by my colleagues. I really don’t have much to say but I am happy that just in less than two years since this idea came up, it has gotten this far. I am really humbled,” Madam Datsa said, adding that it was necessary “so as to continue to showcase our rich culture, traditions and heritage to the rest of the world.”


She was hopeful that the concept would be accepted and implemented by other education boards in the district and other parts of the country.

This concept is not relatively new in Africa as in most Nigerian cities workers and businesspeople alike adorn themselves with native attires on Fridays, not just each month’s last Friday.

The 2023 edition of Morocco’s fashion week will be held from the 8th to the 11th of March. This year the event will be hosted with Riad la Brillante, a hotel nestled in the heart of the medina where traditional craftsmanship and modernity meet harmony and elegance. 

This edition ties in with the worldwide celebration of women, including International Women’s Day on the 8th day of March.

This occasion is organized and supported by the Oriental Fashion Show and it is chaired by Hind Joudar in partnership with M Avenue. The partnership is dedicated to building a lasting anchorage within the kingdom. 

The fashion runway will be at M Avenue, which would not be the first time the fashion runway is hitting one of the city’s must-see attractions developed by Nabil Slitine.

The fashion shows are slated for the 10th of March, starring special exhibitions on Morocco’s iconic caftan. This is intended to pay tribute to the craftswomen on the occasion of World Women’s Rights Day.

The primary aim of this event is to promote young and upcoming designers with a prize allowing winners to travel to a parade in Paris. The competition is organized in conjunction with the styling and modeling schools Casa Moda, Lasalle College, and Escom in a joint partnership. There will be judges like Saher Okal, the founder of the Academia Moda school in Nazareth, Morocco’s Said Mahrouf, and Zineb Joundy as well as Egyptian dressmaker Hany El Behairy on the panel.

From the 9th to the 11th of March, other works of art will be shown throughout the day in collaboration with the association “Dam Lmaalma.”

Then on the final day, a gala dinner will be held within the mythical Royal Mansour palace. It will be preceded by a parade featuring the creations of big names in fashion from international regions. The dinner will benefit Atlas Kinder, an association that takes care of orphaned children.

Marrakech was chosen as the permanent establishment for this bi-annual event celebrating the city as an international fashion capital.


At the recently concluded Miss Planet International beauty pageant held in the Kingdom of Cambodia, Asia, Zimbabwean model, Jemima Mandemwa was crowned the 1st runner-up.


The beauty pageant consisted of several models from different world countries, which Mandemwa, a graduate of Finance and Banking had to contest against.


Last year at the first Miss Planet Zimbabwe, Mandemwa was crowned queen as she has also bagged three local awards from the Bulawayo Association Ceremony (BMAs).


During the beauty pageant competition, the judges were wowed by Mandemwa’s colorful costume, saying the Victoria waterfalls in Zimbabwe inspired her costume.


She said further explained the design, saying “my national costume is a resemblance of my passion I have as a model at the age of six with a combination of my passion in promoting local tourism in my country, it is called the Victoria Falls Wonder”.


In April last year, at the Miss Environment International Pageant in Mumbai, Mandemwa made her country proud after finishing fourth in a competition of 20 models from various countries.


Also, she was crowned the second princess at the Miss Super Globe 2019 held in Dubai, UAE. she was awarded 


Jemima Mandemwa is a 23-year-old graduate of the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST). Currently, she is an Environmental activist, Miss Environment, and a former Miss Earth Zimbabwe.


Miss Planet International is an annual worldwide beauty pageant competition for single women, where participants contest for the crown of Miss Planet International on a bigger platform that offers a blend of culture, advocacy, and a high-quality show.



Ndavi Nokeri is a South African model and beauty pageant that was born on 25th January, 1999. She comes from a christian family and she speaks four languages.


In 2022, she competed for Miss South Africa, which was her first attempt and she won. In 2019, she won the Miss Jozi title.


She holds a Bachelor of commerce, Investment and Management degree from the University of Pretoria. She also held a job at an asset management firm.


She is an advocate for educational equity for all children and students in South Africa. In her interview with Glamour she revealed her struggles, she said “growing up, I struggled with mathematics in school. With every bad result I received, I started believing and accepting that it was something that I could not do until I decided to approach it with a different attitude. I decided that I am the author of my own story and so I redefined myself as a woman who is capable of doing all things she sets her mind to with excellence. This is the attitude that I carry with me into every journey and it has shaped the person I am proud to be today.” 


She prepared for the Miss South Africa, 2022 for two years which shows how passionate she is about preparations and winning.


She represented South Africa in the 71st Miss Universe beauty pageant and she was among those that finished top 16.


She will also go on to represent South Africa in Miss World 2022 and Miss Supranational 2023.


Hannah Iribhogbe is a Nigerian actress, model and beauty queen, she hails from Edo State. She is professionally known as Montana Felix. The name Montana came into existence during her secondary school days when she realized she was multi talented and Felix is her father’s last name.


Hannah is a student of North Lake College in Dallas, Texas, majoring in business management. She is active in charity work as she works with NGOs and orphanages. She is also intentional about women empowerment and getting more women into government and politics and also taken kids off the Nigerian streets. Personally, she is responsible for two girls. She has established a foundation called the Montana Initiative, an organization working to feed 10 million children all over Africa.


She began her professional modeling career in 2020. In 2022, she was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2022 at the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in October, 2022.


The 71st Miss Universe beauty competition just took place and Nigeria was ably represented by current Miss Universe Nigeria, Hannah Iribhogbe or Montana Felix as she is popularly known on stage. She is currently in New Orleans, USA for the beauty pageant which officially kicked off on the 11th of January.


The competition was hosted by Jeannie Mai and Olivia Culpo, Miss Universe, 2012. At the end of the event, Miss Universe 2021, Harnaaz Sandhu of India crowned her successor.




In west Africa, where popular belief suggests that only men would typically handle security concerns, Dragon Squad, an exclusively female security outfit founded in 2018, has continued to stand tall among men.


According to the founder, Emem Thomas, 37, a big body type sits on top of the list of requirements for recruitment into the team of female bouncers. Next on the list is a passion for the job, then other qualifications follow.


The team works only with plus-size ladies of a certain weight and shape, creating a haven for huge women to find a path in a field that is typically controlled by men.


Inspiration to float an all-female security team came from the personal experiences of the founder, whose big body always attracted scornful remarks from her thinner peers, puncturing her confidence to pursue the life of pageantry.


She found a forte that put the spotlight on the very thing she was mocked for, and using the same, she built a life for herself, and other young women like her, through her team of female bouncers.


For Thomas, change truly comes when barriers are broken, and women are welcomed to show what they can contribute to all sectors of society. She no longer considers herself an introvert nor does she still shy away from events, and she is gradually replicating the same results in young African girls.


According to her, “Most of them (her girls) were always shy. They couldn’t talk,” she said, pointing out that she too was withdrawn and cold, burdened by her weight. The outfit has reportedly raised African women with skills, strength, and most importantly for Thomas, confidence.


Standing in front of a crowd to give orders can be an uphill task, especially for women who grew up avoiding the public eye. She nudges her girls to always face the crowd and be themselves, even as they bear in mind that they should be seen and known.

These feats add up to her interventions as an advocate for the rights of girls and women.


She believes firmly that female bouncers, simply by listening to troublemakers and victims in a way that most men do not have the temper and calmness for, have the unique ability to wade off danger in an interestingly unusual, yet effective, manner. So, the discussions around hiring bouncers in Africa should cease to tilt towards the regular – employing only men.


Emem always keeps in mind the risk of molestation on the job, as well as the tendency to be looked down on by men, as she hints at the team’s readiness for such cases.


The Dragon Squad’s 43 recruits have worked as security women in over two thousand events including house parties, funerals, political rallies, and club nights, while most young west African girls might be honing their skills in other areas like makeup, fashion, and other trades perceived as ideal for women.


In addition to walkie-talkies, boots, and dark glasses, the bouncers carry pepper spray to wade off potential aggressors.


23-year-old bouncer Peace Vigorous, the youngest of the crew, mentioned that joining the squad helped her see how she could be different from other girls.


On the name choice, Emem says, “I love what I see dragons do in movies, they are also a symbol of power and protection.”


Emem’s newfound confidence, drive, and vision have transformed her social and family life in the city of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, where the 37-year-old lives with her two children.



Chimamamanda Ngozi Adichie is a Nigerian writer and feminist. She was born on the 15th of November, 1977. Her works include novels, short stories and non-fiction.


In 2015, Chimamanda was awarded a MacArthur Genius Grant, she received the PEN Pinter Prize in 2018 and she was also described in the Times Literary Supplement as the most prominent of a procession of critically acclaimed young anglophone authors who has succeeded in attracting a new generation of readers to African literature.


Throughout her lifetime she has received so many awards and has been recognized on so many occasions in line with her work or beliefs. She was recently made the Odeluwa of Abba, a Nigerian chief, by the kingdom of Abba in her native Anambra State. She was the first woman to receive such an honor from the kingdom.


 Chimamanda has just recently featured in Dior’s bag campaign. The French luxury house used the Nigerian feminist writer for the campaign of “The Lady 95.22” which is dedicated to a new variation of the classic Lady Dior bag that was made popular by Diana, Princess of Wales. 


Chimamanda posed in a black pantsuit and a white T-shirt emblazoned with the words “We Should All Be Feminists” which referenced one of her more famous works and first collaboration with the fashion house.


The bag launched on the 12th of January, 2023 and featured a cast of exceptional women from different realms like art, cinema, sports, literature, fashion and music.




The November edition of the Photogenic Stride contest ended announcing a winner and two runners up from Nigeria and Kenya for this edition with over 30 contestants from various African countries. 


Meet Gloria Isaiah the winner of the November edition

The winner Gloria Isaiah won with 3682.5 votes. The 21 year old Nigerian hails from the Igede tribe in Benue State. She is a student studying Banking and Finance/Marketing in the University of Jos in Plateau State. Gloria is a very hardworking and determined young lady who has great passion for fashion, music, and acting. She has a flair for meeting new people and getting to know  and is also an excellent communicator and a people’s person.


Meet Akpan Emilia the first runner up 

Also from Nigeria, Akpan Emilia is from Akwa Ibom. She is also a student pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Banking and Finance in the University of Jos, Nigeria. Emilia was one of the contestants for the October edition of the Photogenic Stride, who heard about the contest through a friend of hers. She was able to achieve this feat through the help of her friends who assisted her in the voting process. As one who loves and wants to be a fashion designer, Emilia does not have plans of pursuing modelling as a full time career although she does have a side hustle of dying hair. She had a total of 3239 votes.


Meet Grace Wanjiru Chege the second runner up

From Kenya, lives in Nairobi Grace finished the November edition with 3153.5 votes. The 29-year old went to Kibondeni college and did a one year course in Hotel Management and has had various job opportunities in hotels. In an interview with Afridesk, Grace revealed that she has always had passion for modelling as she has trained in a modelling agency in Kenya and also has a mouth-watering modelling portfolio. She has also participated in an online African Hair Contest called “Seensta”, in which she won. For Grace, being a model is the best career she would choose, as she has the height, body and pose. She got to know about Afrisquare through her cousin and this will be her third time contesting for the Photogenic Stride contest. Grace plans to pursue modelling full time and hopes that the Afrisquare platform will take her modelling career to a next level.


In her first International pageant appearance, Zimbabwean model Nomatter Shamuyarira was crowned the Universal Queen Africa 2022 at the pageantry held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.


The competition had contestants from 15 African countries including the host nation Nigeria, Angola, Tunisia, Egypt, Cameroon, South Africa and Uganda, with Botswana’s representative as the first runner-up, Ghana and Gambia representatives as second and third runners-up respectively. 


As part of her winning package, the Queen was awarded a cash prize of $5000, a trip to any African nation of her choice, as well as an endorsement deal as a brand ambassador with companies in Nigeria.


Shamuyarira who works with a top-modelling agency in Zimbabwe revealed that winning the Universal Queen Africa 2022 is a milestone in her modelling career.


She began her professional modelling career in 2017, as she was inspired by her aunt and former Miss Zimbabwe, Angeline Musasiwa and within the five years of her career, Shamuyarira has received myriads of accolades in pageantry and commercial modelling.


Asides modelling, Shamuyarira is a public health researcher with the Biomedical Research and Training Institute of Zimbabwe and a director of a local-based, youth-led and non-governmental organisation focusing on mental health literacy.


The next edition of the pageantry will be hosted in Zimbabwe next year.

2022 Afro Hair Culture and Beauty Festival Incites Natural Hair Growth in Africa 

The two-day Africa Hair Summit for Afro hair culture and beauty festival opened its curtains on Thursday 1st December and ended on Friday 2nd December, which took place at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria.
The fashion exposition was put together by Specialized Exhibitions Montgomery, as it is the largest gathering of corporate organizations and natural hair lovers showcasing the beauty of African culture and Heritage.
Speaking to the Head of Volunteers at the festival, Precious Zoe, she said the festival is not just for women only, it is also for men as they have had celebrities at the festival, the likes of Prince and Whitemoney ex-BBN housemates.
She revealed that they have also had a virtual show in South Africa last year and they also visit schools as well as to enlighten students on how to grow and maintain black natural hair.
Since its inception in 2016, this will be the 2nd edition of the Afro hair culture and beauty festival. The fashion show was also held in Lagos last year.
According to Precious, they also have partners in other countries, such as South Africa, and they usually organize virtual shows in June and the physical shows are usually in December.
The festival provided a platform for exhibitors to place their products in a market channel to attract customers.
It entertained the nitty gritty that naturalists needed to know about toxic chemicals in hair and beauty products, along with teachings on the production of healthy alternatives that promote natural hair growth and maintenance.
The Afro hair culture and beauty festival also featured hairstyles for different careers, styling products, treatment, and natural hair care services.


At the Miss Pride of Africa Beauty Pageant that was just concluded, Nigeria emerged as one of the top winners in the competition which was held in London, United Kingdom.


The  Beauty Pageant took place on 26th November, 2022 and was organised to empower African women by providing a platform that would encourage them to further give an in-depth humanitarian service on the continent. 


The competition had a number of African countries including Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Congo, Mayottee and Sierra Leone, with representative beauty queen aspirants.


Nigeria’s Akerejola Itiafa was one of the top 3 winners after a total of 17 candidates contested for the ultimate crown and several stages of assessment.


Itiafa said that: “As Queen, my charitable campaign would be focused on promoting financial literacy in Africa, especially for low-income enterprising women, women with small business”, as she spoke on her plans for the crown.


Asides from being crowned the People’s Queen, she also earned other awards such as second princess, an ambassador of the pageant and the award of the best swimwear.


During the contest, her incredible manifesto was targeted at increasing financial literacy among low-income enterprising women in Nigeria and also, she showcased the multi-faceted aspects of the Nigerian culture through food and various cultural attires.


The newly crowned Miss Pride of Africa Beauty is a proud Nigerian from Ogori-Magongo in Kogi state. She is a graduate of the University of Lincoln with a B.A. in Business Marketing and Masters Degree holder in International Trade, Strategy and Operations from the University of Warwick.


Tricia Andong, a Nigerian was announced as the winner of the October edition of the Photogenic Stride Contest, which kicked off on the 14th of October 2022.


The Photogenic Stride Contest is an online beauty contest that showcases the true beauty of the African woman, which runs every month with a money prize of $150 to be won.


The winner for the October edition, Tricia Andong is a 200 level student, studying Banking and Finance in the University of Jos, Nigeria. She entered the competition at the tail-end of it, with 80 ladies from other African countries. Despite her late entry, she had a victory-win with a total of 3,149.5 votes.


In an interview with the Afrisquare team, Tricia was asked how she was able to get people to vote for her; she revealed that it was not an easy one, as she had to constantly call her friends explaining to them the voting process and also share the voting link to friends of theirs.


As a student who was affected by the ASUU strike, Tricia also asked random people to vote for her while she was working during the strike period. However, this was a challenge to Tricia, she said: “Some people called me names for asking to use their details to vote for me, but I didn’t give up because I saw the possibility of me winning”.


Regardless of the challenges, Tricia told the Afrisquare team that she would love to take on the modelling career and also contest again, as she had used the cash prize to pay for her house rent in school. She said the platform was quite helpful to her.


The Photogenic Stride Contest is solely based on merit as ladies from African countries get to upload their best pictures and have people vote for them by sharing the voting link. The November edition has kicked off and it’s up and running with just 5 days to go.


Photogenic stride is an online beauty contest for African women where participants upload their finest pictures and viewers get to vote. It is a monthly contest and each winner goes home with $150. 


Miss Grace Monicah emerged as the winner in the September 2022 edition. Miss Grace Monicah is a 22-year old Kenyan based undergraduate of Kenya institute of professional studies pursuing a certificate in ICT.


She is currently working as a debt collector and a part time photoshoot model. Apart from the photogenic stride, Miss Grace has participated in other online photo contests like Seensta, a natural hair challenge and a traditional wear challenge where she emerged 2nd and third, respectively.


Miss Grace heard of the photogenic stride contest from a friend who was also a participant. During her interview with Afridesk she was asked if it was difficult soliciting for votes to which she replied “it was not easy but since I am a go-getter, I did not give up. I wanted to win.” 


She has expressed her desire to pursue modeling full time but the one challenge she is facing is raising the money to enroll into a full time modeling class. 


When asked if there was anything else she would like to pursue apart from her modeling career, her reply was “of course, I am a business oriented person. In the near future, I want to run my own business. I make beads, handmade bracelets, anklets, waist beads etc.” She went ahead to show us her really beautiful designs. She makes them in her free time and sells them. She also reiterated that modeling is still her greatest passion.


Miss Grace won the photogenic stride contest with a total vote of 5521 which confirms her go-getting personality.

November 2022 Edition of the Photogenic Stride Contest by AfriSQuare Kicks Off

The November 2022 edition of the  Photogenic Stride Contest by AfriSQuare has kicked off today as a winner and other runner-ups emerges from the October edition. This contest which was created to showcase the true beauty of the African woman has proven to be a starting point for aspiring models in Africa, which is evident in the past editions.




Tricia Andong from Nigeria who contested in the October edition  with 80 ladies from other African Countries is the winner with 3,149.5 votes. She is now an AfriSQuare model as she joins the league of other AfriSQuare models, like Princess Monic from Kenya who contested with other 99 ladies from across Africa in the September 2022 Photogenic Stride Contest edition and won with 5,521 votes.   



Currently, ladies from across Africa are warming up to win this November 2022 edition as the contest to showcase the true beauty of the African woman intensifies. The AfriSQuare photogenic stride contest is one of a kind as contestants of the previous editions have benefited either as winners, runners ups or via the consolation prize. 31 year-old Monica Khatokho, founder of Khatz Moniq Apparel fashion store in Kampala,Uganda hosted a charity event with regards to scar appreciation day which was on 22nd October. Monica was diagnosed with Cushing’s syndrome in 2016 and she had to undergo two major life saving surgeries which left her with scars on her belly. In her interview with Africa news she said “I hated myself before, because of the scars. But the moment I accepted that, yes, this is something I cannot change about myself, that acceptance was healing to me”. She wanted people that shared the same journey with her to get the same closure she had gotten and heal from their traumas hence, she hosted the event to celebrate every scar because every scar tells a story. 


This event was hosted at Mestil Hotel in Uganda’s capital, kampala. Plus size people and people with other rare body conditions like vitiligo were also represented at this event. For this first edition, there was a one day audition for the male and female models before the shortlisted models paraded on the catwalk.


Lucy Kemisiga was one of the models that paraded the catwalk and she is a burn survivor. In her interview with Africa news she said “I got my scars in 2011, It was a fire accident. The house at home caught fire from a candle, and I was in there sleeping. I got burnt. I spent a few months at the hospital, and that’s how I got the scars”. 


The message the event was trying to pass was that scars do not make one ugly, each scar tells a story and your trauma does not define you. The most important message for the models was that each scar has a story. 


The theme of the event was “My scars are beautiful”. It was obvious that Monica Khatokho took utmost pride in this event as the creative director.


Proceeds obtained from this event was slated to go towards the Dirare Organization, this organization has been set up to offer support to individuals with scars.


She has decided to make this somewhat of a culture to help people with similar experiences.


Model Career in Africa: Where to Start if You want to be a Model?

There’s no doubt being a model is one of the many career opportunities people want to hop unto. It guarantees you a chance at being popular as well as lovely pictures for the gram.

A model is a person with a role either to promote, display or advertise commercial products. They are human catalogues. African models are those who come from Africa. While it may be easy to identify some of them based on their skin colors, it might not be easy to spot others out as not all of them are dark skinned. Models as rightly said are the human show glass. They are the living mannequins. Models have been said to always possess some special facial and body features which makes them stand out.


Most times, models are expected to be tall. At least a 6’2inches and above is always a starting point for most modelling agencies in Africa. Some models are expected to be slim and have oval shaped faces with pointed nose. Nice dentition would also be a plus most of the time. To be a model,  one shoud have even  Facial Features. Most cosmetic brands look for a symmetrical face with even features, Flawless Skin; attention should be paid to the skin as most cosmetic brands look out for models with clear skin. Models should be confident and expressive; modeling agencies look out for people who can carry and advertise their brand properly. People who are confident about the brand.


This has been the usual criteria for models until recently when body activists have come out to challenge this status quo and state that people should be proud of their bodies hence whatsoever body type a person lives in, he or she should be allowed to model. This brought about other sub groups of models such as the plus size models or curvy models, the albino models, the children models etc. These sub groups are mostly prevalent in the western world however some of them are found in Africa.

The modeling industry is not left out when one is categorizing some of the faults of Africa as a corrupt continent. It is believed that you must have some sort of connection with some top authorities in the modeling agency before you can be chosen. While this is not totally wrong, it is not always the case.

In Nigeria, models get paid #20,000- #80,000  depending on the type of modeling they are into. For instance, face models who are mostly used by makeup artists don’t earn so much, as they are paid per the amount of time makeup is done on their faces. They earn an average of #5,000 -#10,000 per makeup.

Another category of models are the commercial models; these appear in commercial shows and on commodities. For instance, models who advertise for a toothpaste brand. They sometimes appear on the toothpaste pack.. They earn higher than the face models. Most of the time, their modeling relationship with the company who they are advertising for are based on contracts. It can be for a period of one year and above. They earn within the range of #100,000 and #5,000,000.

The runway and fashion models; most people are familiar with this type of models as they mostly model for fashion brands. They advertise the designs of fashion designers. An example is the lagos fashion week which is organized by GTBANK. Their relationship can also be based on contract or can be a one-off payment. They earn between the range of #20,000-80,000.

There are also fitness models; they are athletically built and they appear mostly in commercials that have to do with fitness such as the advertisement of fitness items like training mats, waist trainers, track machines etc. Their pay is usually between #80,000- #100,000 depending on their contract.

Another category of models is what is mostly common among students. They are sometimes referred to as ushers. Here, beautiful, tall ladies are under an agency which is mostly an ushering agency and this agency use their models or ushers whenever they have events. For instance, an agency may use its ushers for events such as a wedding ceremony or a birthday celebration. Their pay is usually per event attended and it ranges between 5,000-10,000.

A model may fall into one or all of the categories listed above. For example; a fcae model can also be a runway model and a commercial model at the same time depending on the agency he or she is working with.

To put yourself out there for modeling agencies to notice you, you need to have a good online presence. Your social media page should contain pictures of you looking elegant, mostly headshots. Most of the time, you might be required to do personal shots for some brands so you can get noticed by them. Most of the time, people buy the brand and the face behind the brand hence a good model for your brand means a good sale of products or commodities.

Models can either be curvy or plus size models, petite models, child models, fitness models. Depending on the modeling agency or brand they are modeling for, models can come in different sizes and heights. For example plus size or curvy models measure up to size 12 up. They are mostly tall and have curvy feature.

Petite models on the other hand, can be very slim and small. They are not mostly used as runway models but can be face models and parts models where they model with some parts of their bodies e.g petite models can model with their face, hand, legs and also their bodies; they can be swim suit models.

Child models are children who model for children brands for instance they can model for children soap, clothes, food etc. there is no age limit when it comes to child models as a child of 6 months can be a model for a soap or a diaper. They are mostly aged 12 and younger.

Fitness models on the other hand, have to be well built. They possess attributes such as protruding muscles, speed etc. they can be models for athletic training materials as well as energy drinks.

Anyone can become a model at any age. There are children models. Most of the time, age doesn’t matter if your body type fits the description of what the modeling agency is looking for. However, some agencies try to put an age bracket to reduce the in-flow of people who might want to apply to be models with them. As long as you have an even toned skin and you fit into the description the agency needs then you are good to go.

Modeling is a bright career path however you have to be extraordinarily to keep you in the industry.
