The music legend Fela Anikulakpo Kuti still lives on as an annual festival called Felabration is usually held in honor of the Afrobeat legend. Felabration is a festival of music and arts to celebrate the life and times of Nigeria’s foremost musical icon.

The conceptualization and idealization of Felabration were conceived by Fela’s eldest daughter, Yeni Anikulakpo, in 1998. Since its inception, the festival has taken place annually with the exception of 1999. The event has now grown into a mega week-long musical event in Nigeria, drawing thousands of visitors every year to the New Africa Shrine from all over the world.

This year’s edition was quite thrilling and elating as it was themed ‘Question Jam Answer’, a classic record composed by Fela and released in 1972. The song perfectly captures the socio-political climate of the nation following the interesting general election, where people are looking for answers to the concerns that have been posed.

The mega week-long festival usually features activities like the Senior Secondary Schools Debate, the Fela Debates (Symposium), the Afrobics Dance Competition, the Artwork Competition, the Dress Fela Fashion Competition, the Musical Concert, and other activities. Felabration, over the years, has drawn many high-class musical artists from across the world, the likes of Hugh Masekela, the talented saxophonist Femi Kuti, legendary Lucky Dube, Awilo, Baba Maal, Les Nubians, King Sunny Ade, Lagbaja, Asa, TuFace, Sauti Sol, Seun Kuti, and many others.

This year’s celebration featured musical stars like Oxlade, Timi Dakolo, Falz, Kcee, Humble Smith, Faze, and many other notable musicians that spanned generations. The performances of these musicians were electrifying and nothing short of extraordinary. Fela’s children, Made Kuti, Femi Kuti, and Seun Kuti also delivered performances that left the audience awestruck.

Felabration 2023, ran through the month of October from the 9th to the 15th, at the New Afrika Shrine in Ikeja, Lagos. Organized by the Felabration Organizing Committee, Felabration is an official tourist destination of the Lagos State government and is a major sponsor.
