This natural wonder is called Ooowu by the locals. The Owu Waterfall is in the Owa Kajola Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The Owu Falls is described as the highest and most spectacular waterfall in West Africa with a staggering 120-meters height above sea level.

The waterfall runs 330 feet down a rocky escarpment that gives a beautiful view to visitors and tourists. It also has a 10-meter-high smaller waterfall close to the main waterfall that runs into a pool of ice-cold water below, where visitors are allowed to swim and relax.

The waterfall is sometimes referred to as a “wonder in the wilderness”, and it also responds to voices when you scream “Oowu”. According to the story told, the louder you shout, the more immense the loudness of the water and the crazier the downpour becomes.

Another story tells that Owu Falls was an abode to a gigantic snake and birds prior to now, that threatened the lives of the people in the community. It was told that the people lived on with this until 1940 when “God” decided to show mercy and love for people. The snake was killed with thunder and the hazardous birds were miraculously chased away.

Its existence is untraceable, as well as its true history is unknown. Although, research shows that it was discovered 40 years ago by Rev. Plafare Dui, a missionary who was on a missionary work for the Sudan Interior Mission better known as the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA).

Owu fall is one the steepest falls in West Africa. The coolness that is felt by the waterfall is one of its most amazing features. It can be felt from a distance of almost 10 kilometers away, particularly during the rainy season, its peak season. The Owu fall is encompassed by a very thick lush rainforest. It is about 1 hour-45 minutes walk from the village to the waterfall.

The Owu waterfall is a great spot to have a fun-filled and unforgettable vacation experience. For first-time visitors, it is advisable to visit the king’s palace before embarking on the tour. This is for you to have a tour guide that will accompany you on the journey, and also because of the distance between Owa Onire and the Owu waterfall.
