Beauty Pageants have existed for a very long time, and one is the Miss Nigeria Pageant, which dates back to 1957. Miss Nigeria is an annual pageant showcasing Nigerian women’s positive attributes. The winner of the pageant usually displays exemplary qualities and serves as a role model for the younger generation in the country.
Let’s look at the first woman to be crowned Miss Nigeria in 1957. She was “Miss Nigeria’s definition of the combination of beauty, grace, intelligence, art, and refinement.
Grace Atinuke Oyelude was the first Miss Nigeria in 1957. She is a retired registered nurse, midwife, and hospital administrator who was born on 16th November 1931. You should have a guess of how old she would be now. She was born in Sabon Gari, a place in Kano State Nigeria, although she is from Kogi State. However, she was raised in the north where she had her primary and secondary education.
In 1957, working with UAC gave her the opportunity to represent the Northern region at the Miss Nigeria Pageant. Her brother had advised her to enter the competition which he saw in an advert in the papers. She was able to register in, and then traveled to Lagos to participate in the pageant.
Before now, the Miss Nigeria contest was a photo competition, where photographs of the contestants were submitted to the pageant organizers, Daily Times. Her brother submitted her photograph, and finalists were shortlisted and invited to Lagos for the live final at Lagos Island Club. Mrs grace was one of those shortlisted. There was no swimsuit competition included back then.
Luckily, Mrs. Grace won the contest. She was given a cash prize of £200, which she used to travel to England and enroll in Nursing school. Months after gaining admission to the School of Nursing in Ashford, she came back and was crowned “Miss Nigeria”. She was also awarded a bicycle, as winners were not given houses or cars back then.
More recently, Mrs. Grace holds the chieftaincy titles of Iyaolu of Isaluland, where she hails from, and Iyalode of Okunland. She was also presented with a Peugeot car by the Miss Nigeria Organisation in 2015.
Mrs. Grace is still as beautiful as ever, a stylish grandmother who still rocks at it. She is a grandmother to many grandchildren.
