Dar es Salaam: The Second Fastest Growing City in the World
In Arabic Dar es Salaam means “abode of peace” it is the largest city and Major port in Tanzania East Africa, founded by the sultan of Zanzibar on the site of the village of Mzizima in 1862.
Dar es Salaam Region is divided into five administrative districts. All the five districts are governed as municipal councils, so all the city suburb are affiliated to them.
It is the third fastest growing city in Africa, after Bamako and Lagos, and the ninth fastest growing in the world. The metro population is 15.12 million and predicted to be as high as 76 million by the year 2100, making it the third largest city in the world.
The city is well known for business and government, major trades that involve manufacturing and services are carried out mostly in the city compared to other parts of Tanzania.
The City transportation system is the public buses called dala which are often found in the major bus sites. Since the introduction of the motorcycle business known as Boda boda , most of the people preferred this type of transportation, which enabled them to get to the city faster compared to the minibusses which faced a lot of traffic. Other types of transportation include the motorcycle and bajaj.
The city has the country’s busiest port which is located on the west of the Indian Ocean, kundalini Creek Southeast of Dar es Salaam’s central business district, it also has an international railway and Airport serving the country with three operating terminals.
Dar es Salaam host the sport centre of Tanzania, which is the largest stadium in East and central Africa, which can accommodate up to 60,000 people, it also host numerous outdoors swimming clubs, table tennis, darts acrobatics , squash and Scrabble during the Muslim month of Ramadan.
Dar es Salaam is twinned with Germany, Turkey, China, and Iran, and is a leading arrival and departure point for most tourists who visit Tanzania
