The Kenya Standard Gauge Railway will connect Kenyan cities and link the country to the neighboring country of Uganda, and through Uganda, to South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and Burundi. There are also plans to link Addis Ababa in neighboring Ethiopia to the North.
The railway system contains different major sections; the Mombasa-Nairobi Section, Nairobi-Naivasha Section, Naivasha-Kisumu Section, Kisumu Malaba Section, Nairobi-Moyale Section, Naivasha-Lokichar Section.
The Mombasa-Nairobi Section is known as the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway and measures 609 kilometers. It connects the port city of Mombasa and Nairobi, the capital and largest city of Kenya. This section was built between October 2016 and January 2018 by China and Road Bridge Corporation. On the 1st of June, 2017, the passenger rail services between Mombasa and Nairobi started and on the 1st of January, 2018, freight and rail services started.
The Nairobi-Naivasha line stretches from Nairobi to Naivasha, a distance of about 120 kilometers. The construction of this line started in 2018 and it was officially opened for passenger train service in October 2019.
The Naivasha-Kisumu Section stretches from Naivasha to Kisumu, on the Eastern shores of Lake Victoria, measuring 267 kilometers.
The Kisumu-Malaba Section takes the SGR line to the town of Malaba, at the international border with Uganda, measuring approximately 130 kilometers. This railway line, totaling 1,500 kilometers is a component of the Lamu Port and Lamu-Southern Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor development project. This line will be extended to Juba in South Sudan under the LAPSSET plan.
The Nairobi-Moyale Section extends from Nairobi to Moyale, at the international border with Kenya’s northern neighbor. It also falls under the LAPSSET program. There is a plan to extend it to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia.
The Naivasha-Lokichar Section will link the two main standard gauge railway systems in Kenya; the Mombasa-Malaba System and the Lamu-Nakodok SGR System. The measurement is estimated at 460 kilometers.
The segment between Mombasa and Nairobi has opened passenger rail service and freight rail service but the rest of the segments are either under construction or still planned. This new Standard Guage Railway is intended to replace the old, inefficient meter-gauge railway system.
