Africa is one of the world’s areas with the fastest-growing innovation and cyber capabilities as a result of its technical advancements. The fact that cybercrimes have increased as a result of this development, nevertheless, emphasizes how crucial it is to incorporate cybersecurity into business goals and policy considerations.

The first-ever Cybertech Africa 2023 conference was held on the continent in recognition of the difficulties. A number of companies, start-ups, illustrious speakers, renowned universities, senior government officials, C-level executives, industry trailblazers, and important decision-makers are among the key participants in the two-day conference, which began on August 1.

The conference was hosted by the National Cyber Security Authority in partnership with Cybertech the Rwanda Convention Bureau, and Smart Africa. 

Vice President of Seychelles, Ahmed Afif commended the revolutionary impact of cyber technology on communication, business, and information sharing pointing out that technology’s constant evolution offers immense opportunities for entrepreneurs to reach a global market.

He addressed Seychelles’ progress in IT infrastructure, mentioning that customs, revenue commission, and immigration systems were fully computerized, although the health sector and internet costs are still problems.

The Vice president applauded Rwanda’s achievements and resilience in the face of challenges and stressed the importance of addressing cybersecurity threats and ensuring data privacy and security. He further said that with a focus on benefiting the people, cyber technology could significantly improve lives.

In order to better secure people, organizations, vital national infrastructure, and the government from the growing cyber threat, the Rwandan government has started to build a cybersecurity policy and plan.

Paula Ingabire, the minister of ICT and innovation, praised Rwanda’s efforts in enacting the Personal Data Protection and Privacy Law and creating the Data Protection Office to uphold data privacy rights and compliance with international standards in her opening remarks during the conference.

She spoke on the need for a harmonized and collaborative approach to mitigate cyber risks effectively, especially in protecting children from online threats like cyberbullying, child exploitation, and harmful content, and called for international cooperation in combating cyber threats.

To increase exposure to global and pan-African markets, industry executives, and thought leaders, and to promote participation in a rapidly expanding innovative ecosystem, Cybertech Africa 2023 will feature an exhibition of cutting-edge cyber companies from a variety of industries as well as a bankathon and hackathon inside the exhibition area.

Future-looking technology like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robots have materialized, fast influencing Africa’s future, according to David Kanamugire, CEO of the National Cyber Security Authority.

The founder of Cybertech, Amir Rapaport, stressed the importance of collaboration rather than competition in the cyber realm, noting that they will consider the possibility of rotating Cybertech Africa in different African countries. 

Following an engaging opening plenary, distinguished guests and delegates from various industries toured the exhibition hall to meet some of Rwanda and Africa’s exciting cyber businesses and start-ups.

As a leading platform for exchanging and sharing ideas, networking, and B2B opportunities for cyber professionals, Cybertech Africa looks ahead to the future – in all cyber trends, including finance, security, IoT and 5G, AI, critical infrastructure, and sustainability, among others.
