A new 5km natural gas pipeline network has been inaugurated in Victoria Island, linking Eko Atlantic City, Lagos, thanks to Axxela Limited and NGML.

This milestone represents a key development in Axxela and NGML’s extensive 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project, which will extend from Victoria Island to Lekki. The newly launched 5km segment, running from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach, marks the project’s first phase. It is anticipated to connect customers from Five Cowrie River by Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp to the future Lekki International Airport.

Kehinde Alabi, Chief Operating Officer of Axxela, remarked, “The launch of the first phase of this ambitious 72.5km pipeline network highlights our commitment to enhancing natural gas infrastructure in the Greater Lagos Area. By delivering the first gas to Eko Atlantic City as an initial customer on this route, we are facilitating broader access to natural gas benefits, providing reliable energy solutions that can drive economic growth. At Axxela, we are not just fueling businesses; we are fostering the development of self-sustaining communities and contributing to Nigeria’s socio-economic advancement.

Justin Ezeala, Managing Director of NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), stated, “For over twenty years, NGML and Axxela have been at the forefront of natural gas advocacy. This expansion project further underscores our partnership and dedication to advancing natural gas infrastructure throughout Nigeria and Africa. We believe that extending the pipeline network to the commercially significant Victoria Island and the rapidly growing Lekki area is a positive step forward.”

David Frame, Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, emphasized the importance of being the first customer to benefit from the project. “This development ensures a more efficient, stable, affordable, and reliable energy supply for our power needs. It sets a high standard for modern urban living and aligns with our vision of creating a future-ready city that emphasizes energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The partnership between Axxela, NGML, and Eko Atlantic City is set to efficiently and reliably meet the energy needs of this urban coastal city. Eko Atlantic City is in the process of developing a 60MW gas-powered plant infrastructure, which is expected to be operational in the coming years. As the city continues to grow, its power demands will be significant, serving both residential and commercial sectors. Axxela, a leader in natural gas processing, distribution, and power development, brings substantial expertise, having supplied piped gas to around 200 industrial and commercial clients through an extensive natural gas network.”

Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International Commercial Centre, is a cutting-edge coastal city situated on Victoria Island. With its ambitious design encompassing large-scale financial, residential, and commercial developments, the city has established itself as a major economic hub. It represents a vision of self-sufficiency and sustainability, featuring advanced urban planning, power generation, engineering, and technology.

Upon completion, the project will enhance domestic gas usage by providing companies and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor with access to pipeline infrastructure. This will make natural gas readily available for various applications, including cooling, industrial feedstock, and decentralized power solutions.
