The greatest investment is made in humans and AGA, which is also known as  AngloGold Ashanti, Obuasi Mine had that in mind when they decided to donate a cheque of one million Ghana cedis to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Obuasi campus.

The donation was made in order to help the institution expand its facilities to maintain high standards as the population of its students increases. According to the Managing Director, Dr. Eric Asubonteng, the donation was in line with the company’s commitment to supporting the establishment and development of the only university campus in Obuasi.

AGA played a key role in setting up the university campus; it provided its initial infrastructure by converting the former mine site for faculty activities. The Managing director also pointed out that the mine was committed to contributing to the socioeconomic development of host communities through community investment.

The population of students on the campus started with 400 but is currently at 2,000 students. The donation will help admit more students as the school introduces more courses.

“We see this collaboration as a key partnership to have this institution in our host communities, giving the youth the opportunity to have access to quality education from a reputable institution like KNUST,” the Managing Director added.

The Managing Director explained that AGA had a commitment to enhancing educational facilities and supporting education as a discipline, covering teacher training, books donation, and strengthening institutional capabilities among others.

The University Relations Officer, KNUST, Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, said the gesture would add to existing facilities and help expand lecture halls and library facilities among others.

He said the KNUST had acquired a 100-acre land to relocate the Obuasi campus to a bigger space as the number increased.

Dr. Bekoe expressed gratitude to AGA for the gesture and called for more support to help in the establishment of more facilities to meet standards.
