According to new research carried out by Trading Brower, Nigeria is revealed to have the highest number of users and owners of cryptocurrencies globally.

The ranking is based on the percentage of the population that has reportedly used or owned cryptocurrency from 2019 to 2022.

Nigeria ranks first on the list with 45% of the population using or owning cryptocurrency, according to the report, as the country boasts of over 90 million people using cryptocurrency almost 1.5 times the population of the UK.

Between 2019 to 2022, there was a 17% and 28% to 45% increase in ownership and usage, respectively which amounted to nearly 34 million people using cryptocurrency over the space of three years. 

Thailand ranked in second place with 44% population reported owning and using cryptocurrency, equating to over 30 million people. With a total of 33 million people and 40% of its population owning and using cryptocurrency, Turkey came third on the list.

Speaking on the findings, a spokesperson for Trading Browser said “the information presented in the data offers valuable perspectives on the industry’s current status, specifically emphasizing the increasing adoption of digital assets worldwide”. 

He continued “It is positive to observe various countries making strides in terms of cryptocurrency regulation and infrastructure. It is hoped that this data will contribute to the further development and widespread acceptance of digital assets”.
